How to Create an Effective Study Schedule for Exams

Step-by-Step to Create a Study Schedule for Competitive Exam
Based on my personal experience and the guidance of my BCS Cadre sir, now we will teach you how to create a study routine to get better results for your SSC, HSC, Honours, or any other competitive exam.
Step 1- Assess Your Subjects and Prioritize
Before starting any study, you should understand your syllabus well. The first thing you need to do is to make a list, which will contain all your subjects and their chapter names. This will make it easier to break down your exam syllabus.
How to give importance to subjects?
List all the subject
First, write down all your subjects and how many questions can come from which chapter on a white paper. Then divide each subject into three categories: difficult, medium and easy.

Prioritize the Difficult Issues First
Give more time to the subjects that you find most difficult. For example, if you find math difficult, set aside 1-2 hours for math every day. How to prioritize study subjects for exams—this is the first step.
Divide the time
To create a balanced study timetable, you need to allocate specific time for each subject. Let's say you have three subjects: Science (hard), Bengali (medium), History (easy). You can allocate the most time of the day for Science, medium time for Bengali and less time for History. Remember, you should not give equal time to all the subjects while studying, but rather give time according to their importance.
This method will make your exam preparation planner much more effective and you will be able to have complete control over your studies.
Break Large Chapters Into Smaller Sections
Many of us feel a sense of dread when we see a big chapter. We think, how can we finish reading such a big chapter? But there is a solution. Dividing a big chapter into small parts makes it much easier to read. This method is called the chunking method in studying.
How to do it?
Break down larger topics
Suppose your science chapter on “Food and Nutrition” is very large. You can divide it into smaller sections like “Types of Food”, “Nutrients”, “Sources of Vitamins”, etc. Then finish reading each section separately.
Use the "Spaced Repetition" method
It is easier to remember something if you read it once and then revise it repeatedly at regular intervals. This is the spaced repetition study plan for exams. For example, if you read a topic this morning, revise it again tomorrow afternoon, and then again a week later. This way, reading is well embedded in the brain.
Set small goals for each day
Set a daily study target for each day. For example: “Today I will do 5 maths and memorize 2 science definitions.” This way, you will be able to gradually complete the entire syllabus through step-by-step learning. This will also increase your confidence.

Create a Weekly Study Schedule
To create a good study schedule, you need to know when your brain is most active. These are called peak alertness hours for learning. Usually, 9 am-12 pm or 6 pm-8 pm are the most effective.
How to use the time?
Use Pomodoro Technique
Pomodoro study method for exams is very effective. In this, you study for 25 minutes, then take a short break of 5 minutes. After studying like this 4 times, take a long break (15-20 minutes). This will help you maintain your focus and reduce fatigue.
Change the subject:
Studying the same subject continuously can get boring. So it is important to change the subject after 2 hours. This will keep your mind fresh and act as a mental refresh technique.

Make Time for Breaks and Self-Care
Many students think that studying for 10-12 hours continuously will give good results. But this is a wrong idea. Our brain also needs rest. Study breaks for better retention are very important.
How to keep yourself fresh?
Take short breaks:
Take a 5-10 minute break after every one to one and a half hours of reading. During this time you can stand up, stretch your arms and legs, or listen to a song.
Get enough sleep:
It is a habit of many to wake up at night during exams. But it is very harmful. 7-8 hours of sleep per day is essential for a student. The best sleep routine during exam preparation is to go to sleep at a certain time and wake up at a certain time. Adequate sleep improves your memory and helps you remember what you've read.
Walk and exercise:
Sitting on a chair for a long time can make you tired. So, go for a walk for 15-20 minutes or do some light exercise. This will work great as a mental refresher during your studies. Also, make some time for sports or any hobby of your choice.
Optimize Study Methods
t's not just about giving yourself time, your study method also needs to be effective. You can make your studies more interesting by using a few effective learning strategies.
Some great methods:
Active Recall:
After reading something, close the book and try to remember it. You can make flashcards, for yourself or ask yourself questions and answer them. This is called self-quizzing. This will help you understand which topics you are still weak on.
Example:
Science: Self-solve 10 questions at the end of each chapter.
Math: Rewrite formulas and equations manually.
Mind Maps and Visual Aids
You can create concept maps or mind maps to easily remember a complex topic. In this, sub-topics are connected around a main topic with lines. This creates a picture in your brain, which helps you remember what you read.
Use different methods
One method does not work for all subjects. Math requires repeated practice, science requires understanding diagrams and lab reports, and Bengali requires reading a poem or story repeatedly to understand its essence. Therefore, study techniques for exams should be changed depending on the subject.

Review your plan and make changes if necessary
After creating a study schedule, you need to review it regularly. Have a weekly review for exam prep session, where you will see which topics you have completed and which ones are left.
Check progress: You can effectively track your study progress in a simple notebook or digital app. This will help you understand where you should devote more time.
Make changes in time: If you see that the routine you have created is not working for you, then change it.
A flexible study plan or adaptive exam schedule will help you in unexpected situations. If a topic seems difficult, then allocate more time for it.
